The DET is adaptive — no two sittings share a question set, so memorised answers are worthless and task-type mechanics are everything. This hub gives each DET task family a focused guide: what it really measures, how the adaptive scoring treats it, a repeatable method, the traps, and free matching practice. Reading · Reading + spelling

Read and Complete

A short passage appears with some of its words damaged: the first letters are given, the rest are missing, and you type the letters back in before the timer runs out. It looks like a puzzle, but it is really a reading task — the surrounding sentences tell you exactly which word belongs in each gap, and the given letters confirm it.

Read and Select

You see a list of words and must pick out the real English words from plausible fakes. The invented words are built to look and sound English — they follow normal spelling patterns — so the task measures whether you genuinely know words, not whether you can guess what English tends to look like.

Complete the Sentence

A sentence appears with one or more blanks, and for each blank you choose the word that completes it best. The wrong options are rarely absurd — they are usually near-misses: a wrong form of the right word, or a word from the right topic with the wrong meaning — so the task tests precise vocabulary and grammar together.

Interactive Reading

Interactive Reading is the DET’s long-form reading task: you work through an extended passage across several linked question steps rather than answering one isolated item. It is the closest the DET comes to traditional reading comprehension — main ideas, stated details and sensible inference all get tested against one text.

Listening · Listening + spelling

Listen and Type

You hear a spoken sentence and type exactly what was said — dictation, scored on the exact words. It compresses listening, short-term memory and spelling into one short task, which is why it responds so well to drilling: the mechanics of holding a sentence and typing it back can be made automatic before test day.

Listen and Select

The audio counterpart of Read and Select: you hear spoken words and choose the real English words among invented ones. The fakes are pronounced as fluently as the real words, so the task measures whether your ear connects sounds to meanings — vocabulary knowledge through the listening channel.

Writing · Extended writing

Writing Sample

The Writing Sample is a longer written response produced near the end of your DET sitting, in the sample stage alongside the video interview. It works differently from the graded tasks: it is ungraded, but it is sent with your scores to every institution you choose — a real admissions officer can read it as your writing in your own words.

Speaking Tasks

The DET tests speaking through a family of tasks rather than one: Picture Description (describe an image aloud), Extended Speaking (develop a response to a prompt), Interactive Speaking (a multi-turn adaptive conversation), and the Speaking Sample — a longer response that, like the writing sample, goes unscored to your institutions. One guide covers them because one skill set carries them all: start immediately, keep going, and structure as you speak.

Turn the guides into a study sequence

  1. Read the DET format guide so the adaptive rules — per-task timers, no back button — are never a surprise.
  2. Work through the task guides above, then drill each mechanic in free DET practice until it is automatic.
  3. Record the speaking family in DET speaking practice and train extended writing in DET writing practice.
  4. Finish with Duolingo's own free official practice test for the adaptive pacing and proctoring flow no third-party site can reproduce.
