Duolingo Read and Complete: how it works, scoring and practice
A short passage appears with some of its words damaged: the first letters are given, the rest are missing, and you type the letters back in before the timer runs out. It looks like a puzzle, but it is really a reading task — the surrounding sentences tell you exactly which word belongs in each gap, and the given letters confirm it.
How the adaptive scoring treats Read and Complete
Read and Complete is machine-scored on the exact letters you restore, so spelling is not a side issue — it is the score. Like every graded DET task it feeds the adaptive engine: do well and later items get harder and worth more, so a careless early passage quietly lowers your ceiling on the 10–160 scale. It is a reading-side task, so it also shapes the Reading subscore and the integrated Literacy and Comprehension subscores.
Adaptive-test reality check: the DET has no back button and every task runs on its own timer, so a method you can execute without deliberation is worth more than a clever one you have to think about. Drill the mechanic until it is automatic — practice results here are task-level feedback, not a prediction of your official 10–160 score.
A three-step method that survives the timer
- Step 1. Read the whole passage once before typing anything. The gaps are solvable from meaning, and the sentences around a gap usually decide the word before the letters do.
- Step 2. Solve the easy gaps first — articles, prepositions and common verbs fall out of grammar almost automatically — then use the completed frame to reason about the harder content words.
- Step 3. Spend the last seconds re-reading the restored passage as English. A completed word that breaks the sentence ("ther" for "there", a singular where the verb needs a plural) is a wrong answer you can still catch.
Three mistakes that cost points
- Attacking gaps left to right in isolation instead of reading the passage first, so you fight three ambiguous gaps that one full read would have resolved.
- Typing a word that fits the given letters but not the sentence — the letters narrow the options, but meaning and grammar make the final call.
- Freezing on one hard gap while the timer eats the easy ones. Bank the certain letters, then come back if time allows — once the task ends there is no returning.

Approach: A full read makes each gap almost inevitable: people who live in a town are “residents”, they bought the “building”, an unpaid community effort is a “volunteer” project, and a cinema “showing” films completes the grammar of the final clause. Type the endings, then re-read the paragraph once — every restored word must leave a sentence a careful writer would accept.
