Duolingo Listen and Select: how it works, scoring and practice
The audio counterpart of Read and Select: you hear spoken words and choose the real English words among invented ones. The fakes are pronounced as fluently as the real words, so the task measures whether your ear connects sounds to meanings — vocabulary knowledge through the listening channel.
How the adaptive scoring treats Listen and Select
Listen and Select scores the accuracy of your real-versus-fake judgements, and wrong selections count against you just as missed real words do. It is a graded task, so it feeds the adaptive engine on the listening side of the 10–160 score and shapes the Comprehension and Conversation subscores. Because sound-alike fakes get more convincing at higher difficulty, a strong run here is the adaptive test probing the edge of your listening vocabulary.
Adaptive-test reality check: the DET has no back button and every task runs on its own timer, so a method you can execute without deliberation is worth more than a clever one you have to think about. A three-step method that survives the timer
- Step 1. Commit instantly to words you recognise — when a sound connects to a meaning without effort, that is genuine knowledge, and hesitation only invites doubt.
- Step 2. For uncertain words, ask the meaning question, not the plausibility question: can you say what it means or use it in a sentence? A fluent pronunciation proves nothing — the fakes have that too.
- Step 3. Keep your nerve on the strangers. An English-sounding word you cannot attach any meaning to is exactly what an engineered pseudoword sounds like; leave it.
Three mistakes that cost points
- Trusting pronunciation as evidence — every fake is spoken with the same natural fluency as the real words.
- Selecting a fake because it resembles a word you know; near-miss sound-alikes are the task’s core trap.
- Letting one unfamiliar real word rattle you into over-selecting or over-rejecting everything that follows. Judge each word independently.

Approach: “Blanket”, “kitchen” and “harvest” land instantly on meanings — select them without ceremony. “Trosper” and “plimsy” sound English and echo real words (“prosper”, “flimsy”), which is precisely the trap: no meaning answers when you ask for one. The method is one question per word — does this sound connect to something I know? — applied fast.
