How Duolingo English Test writing is scored
Duolingo doesn't publish a points rubric, but it does say what its writing tasks evaluate. Here is that list in plain English, which tasks feed your Writing subscore, and a practical way to prepare for each criterion. Sourced from Duolingo's own explanation; checked October 2026.
Which tasks count toward writing
Duolingo names two main writing tasks:
- Interactive Writing — you write a response, then expand it in a second stage on a related theme you haven't covered yet. It tests whether you can develop and revise, not just produce a paragraph.
- The written summary in Interactive Listening — after a listening conversation you summarise what you heard in writing, turning spoken information into clear text.
The Writing Sample near the end of the test is ungraded: it doesn't change your score, but institutions receive it with your results.
The five things Duolingo says it evaluates
| Criterion | Duolingo's wording | How to practise it |
|---|---|---|
| Content and ideas that achieve the task | “generate content and ideas that achieve task requirements” | Answer every part of the prompt, and in the follow-up stage add a genuinely new point instead of restating stage one. |
| Organisation and cohesion | “organize information with clarity and logical cohesion” | One idea per paragraph or block, a clear order, and linking words that show the relationship (because, however, as a result). |
| Grammar: accuracy and range | “apply grammatical structures accurately and with appropriate range” | Mix simple and complex sentences — a relative clause, a conditional — but only structures you can write without errors. |
| Vocabulary: sophistication and diversity | “utilize sophisticated and diverse vocabulary with proper word formation” | Swap repeated general words (good, thing, very) for precise ones, and check word forms (benefit / beneficial). |
| Mechanics | “demonstrate control of mechanics including spelling and punctuation” | Leave 20–30 seconds at the end of each stage to fix spelling, capitals and sentence boundaries. |
Duolingo adds that it values the writing process too: planning and organising your thoughts, thoughtful revision and elaboration, and careful editing. That is why Interactive Writing has a second stage — it rewards developing an answer, not just finishing one.
Where writing shows up on your results
Your overall score is on the 10–160 scale. Since July 2024 the report also shows four individual subscores — Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking — and four integrated subscores. Writing feeds two of the integrated ones: Literacy (reading + writing) andProduction (writing + speaking). If a school sets a minimum subscore, check which one it names. See the DET format guide for the full report.
A preparation routine that maps to the criteria
- Plan for 20–30 seconds: a position and two points (content, organisation).
- Write with one concrete example per point, varying sentence types you control (grammar, vocabulary).
- In stage two, add something new — a counter-point, consequence or example — rather than repeating stage one (elaboration).
- Reread for spelling, word forms and sentence boundaries (mechanics, editing).
Practise the two-stage format with real timing in ourfree DET Interactive Writing practice, then take the routine into the 2- or 4-week preparation plan.
Common questions
How is Duolingo English Test writing scored?
Duolingo says its writing tasks evaluate whether you generate content and ideas that meet the task, organise them clearly and cohesively, use grammar accurately and with range, use sophisticated and varied vocabulary with correct word formation, and control spelling and punctuation. It also looks for planning, revision and elaboration, and careful editing.
Which DET tasks count toward the writing subscore?
Duolingo names two main writing tasks: Interactive Writing (write, then expand your answer on a related follow-up) and the written summary at the end of Interactive Listening. The Writing Sample at the end of the test is ungraded.
Where does my writing show up on the DET score report?
Since July 2024 the report shows a Writing subscore alongside Reading, Listening and Speaking, plus four integrated subscores. Writing feeds two of them: Literacy (reading and writing) and Production (writing and speaking). All are on the 10–160 scale.
Is a longer DET writing answer always better?
Duolingo lists content that achieves the task, organisation, grammar, vocabulary and mechanics — not raw length. Developing your ideas usually means writing more, but padding with repetition or memorised phrases does not serve any of those criteria.
