The TCF Canada runs four sections in one sitting — Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking — each scored on its own scale and converted to NCLC by IRCC separately: no section can compensate for another. Compréhension orale (Listening)
Thirty-nine multiple-choice questions in 35 minutes, with each recording played once only and difficulty climbing steadily from A1 to C2. The single-play rule is the section's defining fact: there is no second chance at any recording, so the skill being measured is first-pass listening, and the preparation that matters is training exactly that.

Thirty-nine multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, climbing from A1 to C2: signs and short messages first, then everyday and professional texts, and finally dense, abstract passages at the top of the ramp. Unlike listening, you control the clock here — which makes pacing strategy, not comprehension alone, the difference between candidates of equal French.

Three tasks in 60 minutes, each with an official word range: Task 1, a short message (60–120 words); Task 2, an article or letter recounting an experience (120–150 words); Task 3, a comparison of two viewpoints followed by your own position (120–180 words total, split roughly 40–60 for the comparison and 80–120 for your position). Two examiners mark the section — double correction — on the 0–20 scale.

A live interview of about 12 minutes with an examiner, in three tasks: a guided interview on familiar topics (about 2 minutes, no preparation), a role-play interaction where you obtain information (about 3½ minutes, with 2 minutes to prepare), and a point-of-view task where you develop an opinion (about 4½ minutes, no preparation). The exchange is recorded and double-corrected, scored 0–20.
