Decoding your PTE score report
Four communicative skill numbers decide your Canadian immigration outcome, but several PTE tasks contribute to two skills at once. Once you see the wiring, confusing scores start making sense — and training gets a lot more efficient.
What's on the report
A current report has an Overall Score, four Communicative Skillsscores (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing) on 10–90, and a separate Skills Profile. For Canada, IRCC converts only the four Communicative Skills scores to CLB — not the Overall Score and not the profile bars. Convert the four exact scores here.

The eight current profile rows are Open response speaking and writing; Reproducing spoken and written language; Extended writing; Short writing; Extended speaking; Short speaking; Multiple-skills comprehension; and Single-skill comprehension. They replace the old enabling-skill view; do not convert a profile bar into a CLB level.
The key idea: integrated scoring
PTE includes integrated tasks: one response can contribute to two communicative skills. For example, some Writing points come from the Listening part. Other tasks contribute to only one skill, so use the task's published score contribution rather than assuming every task is integrated.

"I understood everything — why is Listening low?"
Comprehension is only part of the picture. Write From Dictation and Repeat Sentence also test how accurately you reproduce what you heard, while other Listening tasks test selecting, completing or summarizing information. Reading the skill numbers like a strategist
- Low Writing + fine elsewhere: audit form and word limits, then check errors in integrated tasks that also feed Writing. Core and Academic Summarize Written Text use different form rules.
- Low Listening + fine Reading: separate comprehension errors from reproduction errors; do not assume Write From Dictation is the only cause.
- Low Speaking despite fluent delivery: inspect the profile and your performance across content, pronunciation and oral-fluency demands; one smooth recording does not diagnose the whole score.
- Actual score differs from a mock: Pearson says a practice score is an indicator, not a prediction; the test-day result may be the same, higher or lower.
Think the score itself is wrong?
Read the rescore decision guide first — a PTE rescore can lower your score and always replaces it, so it's rarely the right move.
