Minimum IELTS score for Express Entry — program by program

There is no single "minimum IELTS for Canada". Each Express Entry program sets its own CLB floor, and IELTS General Training bands map onto those floors unevenly — listening always demands more. Here are the exact numbers, and the more important distinction: the minimum gets you intothe pool; it almost never gets you invited.

Why the minimum is a trap

Meeting a program floor makes you eligible, but Express Entry is a ranking contest. At CLB 7 your four abilities earn 68 core points (single applicant); at CLB 9 they earn 124 — and CLB 9 also unlocks the maximum skill-transferability bonuses that CLB 7 leaves on the table. The full arithmetic is inhow many CRS points each CLB level is worth, but the short version: the distance between "minimum" and "competitive" is usually the difference between CLB 7 and CLB 9 — the 8777 combination.

Three mistakes that void good scores

  • Booking Academic instead of General Training. IRCC only accepts IELTSGeneral Training for Express Entry. Academic scores cannot be transferred —check you booked the right version before paying.
  • Averaging your skills. IRCC counts your lowest skill, never an average. A 7.5 / 7.0 / 7.0 / 6.5 result is CLB 8 material in three skills and CLB 8 in none that matter — your usable level is set by the 6.5.
  • Letting the result expire mid-application. Test results must be valid both when you submit your profile and at eAPR —the two-checkpoint rule.

Minimum IELTS questions

What is the minimum IELTS score for Express Entry?

There is no single minimum — it depends on the program. Federal Skilled Worker requires CLB 7: IELTS General Training 6.0 in all four skills. Canadian Experience Class requires CLB 7 for TEER 0/1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2/3. Federal Skilled Trades requires CLB 5 in speaking and listening but only CLB 4 in reading and writing.

Is IELTS 6.0 in every skill enough for Canada PR?

IELTS General Training 6.0 in all four skills is exactly CLB 7, which meets the Federal Skilled Worker minimum and the CEC TEER 0/1 minimum. But meeting the minimum only lets you enter the pool — at CLB 7 your language points are usually too low to be invited without strong points elsewhere.

Is IELTS 5.5 enough for Express Entry?

IELTS General Training 5.5 in every skill works out to CLB 6 overall, which is below the Federal Skilled Worker floor (CLB 7) but meets the Canadian Experience Class minimum for TEER 2/3 jobs (CLB 5) and the Federal Skilled Trades reading/writing floor.

Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for Express Entry?

General Training. IRCC does not accept IELTS Academic for any Express Entry program, and Academic scores cannot be converted or transferred.

What IELTS score should I actually aim for?

CLB 9 — listening 8.0, reading 7.0, writing 7.0, speaking 7.0 ("8777"). That is where core language points jump and skill-transferability points reach their maximum, which is why it is called the Express Entry sweet spot.
