Read the passage and answer the question.
Some desert plants survive long droughts by becoming dormant rather than dying. During dry spells, certain shrubs drop nearly all their leaves and slow their internal processes almost to a halt, appearing dead to a casual observer. When rain finally arrives, they can resume growth within days, sending out fresh leaves and even flowering quickly to take advantage of the brief moisture. This strategy saves water and energy during hard times. By investing in rapid recovery instead of constant activity, these plants outlast competitors that cannot tolerate such extended periods of inactivity.
