Read the passage and answer the question.
The practice of crop rotation, in which farmers plant different crops in a field across successive seasons, has been used for centuries to keep soil productive. Certain plants, such as beans and peas, host bacteria on their roots that capture nitrogen from the air and enrich the soil. Following these with a crop that demands a lot of nitrogen, such as corn, allows the second crop to thrive without as much added fertilizer. Rotation also disrupts the life cycles of pests and diseases that build up when the same crop is grown repeatedly in one place.
