Read the passage and answer the question.

Cities around the world are rethinking the colour of their roofs. Dark roofs absorb a great deal of sunlight and release it as heat, which can raise temperatures both inside buildings and across whole neighbourhoods. Painting roofs a reflective white, or coating them with light-coloured materials, sends much of that sunlight back into the sky instead. Studies in hot cities have found that buildings with these cool roofs stay measurably cooler inside, reducing the need for air conditioning. On a larger scale, widespread adoption could lower the overall temperature of dense urban areas during heatwaves, offering a relatively cheap response to rising summer heat.

How do cool roofs help keep buildings cooler?
