Arrange the sentences into a logical order.

Put the sentences in the correct order:

  1. Today, these sonar surveys reveal a hidden landscape every bit as dramatic as anything on dry land.
  2. By converting those echoes into depth measurements, ships could finally trace the shape of underwater mountains and trenches.
  3. A turning point came with sonar, which sends sound pulses downward and times how long their echoes take to return.
  4. The problem was that sunlight fades within a few hundred metres, leaving the seabed in total darkness.
  5. For centuries, mapmakers left vast stretches of the deep ocean floor as blank, unknowable space.
