Iceland generates almost all of its electricity from renewable sources, but the route it took is unusual. Sitting on a boundary between tectonic plates, the island is riddled with volcanic heat. Engineers tap this by drilling into hot underground reservoirs, using the steam to spin turbines and the leftover hot water to warm homes directly. Glacial rivers fed by abundant rainfall supply the rest through hydropower. This cheap, stable energy has attracted aluminium smelters and, more recently, data centres drawn by cool air and low power costs. The model is hard to copy elsewhere, however, because few countries combine such intense geological heat with a small population and plentiful water.
