The Antikythera mechanism, recovered from a Roman-era shipwreck off a Greek island in 1901, has puzzled researchers for over a century. This corroded lump of bronze, once thought to be an ornament, turned out to contain dozens of precisely cut gears. Modern imaging revealed that the device modelled the movements of the Sun, Moon, and probably the known planets, and could predict eclipses. Its complexity is startling: nothing of comparable mechanical sophistication appears in the surviving record until clockwork emerged in medieval Europe, more than a thousand years later. The mechanism therefore overturns the assumption that ancient engineering was confined to simple tools and monumental construction.
