Read the passage and select ALL statements it supports.

In the dark depths of the ocean, where sunlight never reaches, many creatures make their own light through a chemical reaction called bioluminescence. This cold glow serves several purposes. Some fish dangle a glowing lure to draw curious prey within striking distance. Others release a bright cloud of light to startle a predator and cover their escape, much like a smokescreen. Certain animals use patterns of flashes to recognise mates of their own species in the crowded blackness. Remarkably, the reaction wastes almost no energy as heat, which is why it is described as cold light. For deep-sea life, glowing is less a luxury than a tool for survival.

Based on the passage, which statements about deep-sea bioluminescence are correct? (select all that apply)
