When movable-type printing spread across Europe in the late fifteenth century, it did more than make books cheaper. Because copies could now be produced quickly and identically, the price of written knowledge fell sharply, and ideas travelled faster than ever before. A scholar in one city could read the exact same text as a rival hundreds of kilometres away, making it easier to compare findings and build on them. Printers themselves became a new kind of business, employing skilled workers and seeking profitable titles. Yet not everyone welcomed the change: authorities worried that dangerous or heretical ideas could now spread beyond their control.
