The Antikythera mechanism is a corroded bronze device recovered in 1900 from an ancient shipwreck near the Greek island of Antikythera. Built more than two thousand years ago, it contains dozens of interlocking gear wheels and is widely regarded as the earliest known analogue computer. Researchers have shown that, by turning a handle, an ancient user could track the positions of the Sun and Moon and even predict when eclipses were likely to occur.

Because it used a system of interlocking —gearsmagnetslenses to model the movements of the sky, the Antikythera mechanism is often described as the oldest known —computertelescopecalendar, capable of forecasting events such as eclipses.
