The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient Greek device recovered from a shipwreck near the island of Antikythera in 1901. Made of bronze and containing dozens of interlocking gears, it is widely described as the earliest known analogue computer. Researchers believe it was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses and to track the timing of events such as the ancient Olympic Games. Because the surviving fragments are heavily corroded, much of our understanding comes from modern imaging techniques such as X-ray scanning. The identity of the person or workshop that built the mechanism, however, remains unknown.
