Bioluminescence, the production of light by living organisms, occurs across many species, from fireflies to deep-sea fish. The light is generated by a chemical reaction in which a molecule called luciferin reacts with oxygen, usually assisted by an enzyme. Unlike an ordinary light bulb, this process produces very little heat, which is why it is sometimes called 'cold light.' In the ocean, animals use bioluminescence for a range of purposes, including attracting prey, confusing predators, and communicating with potential mates. Some species can even release glowing clouds into the water to distract an attacker while they escape.

Bioluminescence produces a large amount of heat compared with a conventional light bulb.
