The lyrebird, native to the forests of eastern Australia, is celebrated for its astonishing ability to imitate sounds. Males build small mounds of earth on which they perform elaborate songs to attract mates, weaving together the calls of dozens of other bird species. Remarkably, they can also reproduce mechanical noises they have heard, from camera shutters to chainsaws. The female builds the nest and raises the chicks alone. Although lyrebirds are not currently endangered, conservationists watch them closely because bushfires can destroy large areas of the dense undergrowth where they feed and breed.
