Concrete is the most widely used building material on Earth, but producing its key ingredient, cement, releases large amounts of carbon dioxide. Researchers are therefore searching for greener alternatives. One promising idea revives a technique used by ancient Roman builders, whose harbour structures have survived two thousand years in seawater. Studies suggest that lumps of lime in the Roman mix allowed cracks to heal themselves when water seeped in, forming new minerals that sealed the gaps. Modern engineers hope that adapting this self-healing chemistry could make today's concrete last far longer and reduce the need for frequent, carbon-heavy repairs.
