The Dutch city of Rotterdam was almost entirely rebuilt after heavy bombing destroyed its centre during the Second World War. Rather than recreate the old streets, planners chose a bold modern style, and the city became a showcase for daring architecture. Today its skyline features cube-shaped houses tilted at sharp angles, a market hall shaped like a giant arch, and one of Europe's busiest container ports. Much of the land sits below sea level, so engineers rely on an elaborate system of dykes, pumps, and floating structures. Some new buildings are even designed to store rainwater and release it slowly to prevent flooding.
