Tardigrades are microscopic animals found in moss, soil, and ocean sediment across the planet. When their surroundings dry out, they expel most of their body water, pull in their legs, and curl into a barrel shape known as a tun. In this state their metabolism slows to almost nothing, and they can endure extreme cold, intense radiation, and even the vacuum of space. Once moisture returns, many revive within hours and resume normal life. Despite this toughness, tardigrades are not immortal: in their active, hydrated state they live only a few months and are easily killed by everyday hazards.
