The tuatara is a reptile found only on a scattering of islands off New Zealand. Although it resembles a lizard, it belongs to a separate order whose other members died out long ago, making it a survivor of an otherwise vanished lineage. Tuataras grow slowly and can live for more than a century. They remain active at cooler temperatures than most reptiles tolerate, and a female may lay eggs only once every few years. Conservationists have moved breeding groups to predator-free islands, where introduced rats once threatened their survival.
