The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient device recovered from a shipwreck near a Greek island in 1901. At first, divers thought the corroded lump of bronze was just debris. Decades later, X-ray imaging revealed dozens of interlocking gears packed inside. Researchers now believe the machine, built more than two thousand years ago, could predict the positions of the sun and moon and even forecast eclipses. Nothing of comparable complexity appeared again in Europe for over a thousand years. Its existence shows that ancient engineers had mathematical and mechanical skills far greater than historians once assumed.
