Read the text and answer the question.
The colour of a flamingo is not something the bird is born with. Young flamingos hatch with grey or white feathers. Their familiar pink shade develops over time and comes entirely from their diet. The small shrimp and algae they eat contain natural pigments called carotenoids, the same family of compounds that makes carrots orange. As a flamingo digests this food, the pigments are absorbed and deposited in its growing feathers. A bird kept on a diet poor in these pigments will gradually fade to pale grey. Zookeepers therefore add carotenoid-rich food to keep captive flamingos brightly coloured.
