Many people assume that bats are blind, but this is a myth. Every bat species can see, and some that feed on fruit have vision as sharp as a rat's. What sets most bats apart is echolocation: they emit high-pitched calls and listen for the echoes that bounce back, building a sound picture of their surroundings in total darkness. This skill lets insect-eating bats catch moths in mid-air on moonless nights. Fruit bats, by contrast, often rely more on their eyes and keen sense of smell to locate ripe food, and several of them do not echolocate at all.
