For decades, the small town of Aldermere measured time by the whistle of its paper mill, which sounded at the start and end of each shift. When the mill closed, the silence unsettled many longtime residents, who said the town felt strangely empty without it. A local historian recorded the whistle before the equipment was dismantled, and the town now plays the recording once each day at noon.
