Some desert plants survive years of drought by entering a state of near-total dormancy. The resurrection plant, for instance, curls into a brittle brown ball that appears completely dead. Its tissues lose almost all their water, and its growth halts entirely. Yet when rain finally arrives, the plant unfurls and turns green within hours, resuming its life as though no time had passed. Scientists studying this ability hope to apply its lessons to agriculture, perhaps one day helping crops endure longer dry spells without dying.
