The community garden on Wexler Street began three years ago as an empty lot strewn with rubble. A retired teacher named Dolores Pham organized neighbours to clear the ground, and the city eventually agreed to lease the land for one dollar a year. Today the plot holds forty raised beds, a small toolshed, and a compost area. Members pay no fee, but each is asked to volunteer four hours a month on shared chores such as weeding the paths and repairing fences. Surplus vegetables are donated to a nearby food bank, which received over six hundred kilograms of produce last season.
